Dead Island 2 finally saw a re-reveal at Gamescom Opening Night in August. First announced in 2014, the game saw a few developer changes and a long period of silence, leading to concerns that it would become vaporware. Finally, Deep Silver and developer Dambuster Studios are ready to release this game early next year. In one of its earlier incarnations, Dead Island 2 was supposed to feature four playable characters. With Dambuster taking over, however, the developer confirmed that it would in fact include six playable characters, each with different unique skill trees and personalities. Let’s take a look at our cast for this upcoming action RPG.

Jacob

Gamescom 2022 brought us our look at Dead Island 2’s first playable character, Jacob. Featuring prominently in the trailer (and the front cover art), Jacob gives off the vibe of a party animal with an aesthetic that has drawn several comparisons to Lenny Kravitz. As far as weaponry goes, Jacob carries a rifle that’s outfitted with nails on one end and a blade on the other. This turns the gun into a two-sided melee weapon, although the trailer does show him using the rifle for its intended purpose to shoot a zombie. Both the trailer and the box art also show Jacob with a katana, indicating that he will feature a strong melee focus compared to the other characters. As it is, Jacob is the only playable character we know of right now. While he waves to other humans at the end of the trailer, we don’t get a strong enough look at them. Thus, it’s hard to conclude whether these characters will be playable or not. Check back for more information on Dead Island 2’s playable characters as it becomes available. In the meantime, Dead Island 2 is set to release in February 2023.
